CHAPTER FIFTEEN

Brielle waved goodbye to the building inspector as he pulled out of the driveway of the soon-to-be-Wilde-sisters’ storybook ranch. The sound of chirping birds filled the air and a dog barked in the distance. Willow was going to love this house.

Heading to Sam’s SUV, she fished his keys out of her purse along with her cell and then called her sister.

“It’s 5:50 a.m.,” Willow’s groggy voice greeted Brielle. “This better be important.”

“Well, good morning to you, too, sunshine.” Brielle made her voice lighter and sweeter than usual.

“What’s good about it? You woke me up early.”

“Your alarm goes off in ten minutes. I wanted to catch you before you started your day.”

A heavy sigh and the rustling of bed covers came through the cell phone. “What’s up?”

Miss Not-a-Morning-Person wasn’t going to spoil Brielle’s good mood. “The house is perfect,” she gushed. “The inspection went great. There isn’t anything that needs to be done. We’re closing on Monday.”

“Oh.” Willow’s lack of emotion set Brielle’s hair on end.

“You don’t sound excited. Is something wrong? Is Grandma, okay?” She unlocked the SUV and quickly got inside in case she needed to be sitting down for whatever upsetting news Willow was about to spring on her.

“Grandma’s the same. Did Operation X work?”

Operation X—as Willow called Brielle’s mission to win Xavier’s heart—drew one problem after another. Willow already knew about the panic attack and enlisting Luke’s help, but Brielle hadn’t had a chance to text yesterday about Xavier being a no show. “I haven’t had a chance to be alone with him.”

“Really?” Her voice perked up. “When you didn’t text yesterday, I assumed you must’ve been having a great time.”

“Actually, I did have a great time.” With Luke….starting at sunup with coffee and banana bread on the car ride to Tree Wishes and ending late with him tucking her into bed. Suddenly warm, she slipped off her sweater. “What does that have to do with our new house?”

“To be honest, Brielle, I’m worried about buying it with you.”

Her spine went rigid. Why would her sister be worried about that? Brielle always shared equally in the house chores and maintenance, the grocery shopping, and she paid her bills on time. “What do you mean? Why?”

“Because I can’t afford a house on my own and I don’t want to hold you back.”

“I don’t understand.”

“You promised me a two-year commitment.”

“Yes, I know. You don’t want to move twice in a year. What are you getting at?”

“What if you and Xavier want to move in together?”

She nearly choked on her own spit. In none of her daydreams about him had Brielle imagined moving in with Xavier. Just like her romance novels, their story ended with a confession of love and a vague they-lived-happily-ever-after ending.

Willow was right, though, in the real world, relationships continued beyond the last page. But it was way too soon to worry about that. “We’re getting ahead of ourselves, aren’t we?”

“I’m just being practical. If you can’t commit to a two-year deal with me, then I need to find a cheaper place to live ASAP.
